For many applications, many paint-shooters (myself included) have enjoyed Dupli-Color Truck, Van & SUV Clear Topcoat #T125. While this acrylic lacquer should only be used with a respirator while in a well-ventilated area (seriously, it’s … Continue reading →

That being the case, what led me to the airbrush, one of the most vexing of the arting tools? I’d been doing art stuff for as long as I can remember when the airbrush entered my life. Honestly, while I’d heard about … Continue reading →

Today, when I was prepping boards for acts of art, it was again hammered home why the higher price of Ampersand’s family of “bords” is worth it. I find the best surface for airbrushing is smooth but with some “tooth” — fine scratches that help the paint to adhere, but not coarse enough to make erasing, scratching, or wiping a problem. With a product like Ampersand’s Claybord, for most projects I find it to be too smooth for good paint … Continue reading →

Because of the famously bad batch of frisket that has permeated the market for the past few years, airbrush artists have been trying to find ways to mask their works. The trick is: how to get masks to stay in place if you work on an easel? My preferred method is to hold them in place using strong magnets. To that end, I need to use a sheet of steel on my easel behind the boards I'm painting. Continue reading →

One aspect of airbrushing that adds an element of difficulty peculiar to the discipline is the use of masks and shields. These spray obstructions are important tools in the shaping of crisp artwork. When you branch away from the store-bought products, the artist must then consider what material to use for their custom masks and shields (M/S). By the very nature of how a typical airbrush deposits color, it’s difficult to have very crisp transitions. Yes, with a lot of … Continue reading →

As I mentioned in Once Again With Cameron, I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the final product. It was definitely a good effort for the first real art being committed with intent for over a year, but it just wasn’t quite to the standard I’d expected. So I tried again. On this second go (which I imaginatively titled “Cameron’s Bad Day II“), I was much more careful with getting the landmarks of the face correct–especially the eyes. Let me put the … Continue reading →

Although I’m back doing art, that doesn’t mean I just close the writing valve. I’m always writing. Usually, during the art periods, it’s mostly blogs or development work for future writing projects, but sometimes a situation arises that simply cries out for words to be written. Such has been the case with a little fan-story contest thingy. So as not to be too duplicative, here’s a link to the full context as well as the story itself: My Wheaton/Scalzi Unicorn-Pegasus-Kitten … Continue reading →
